GRAPHIC DESIGN

Graphic design is the point at which art and communication meet. It prompts a person to contemplate over the combinations of images and words. With its visual language, it influences society and helps bring about change in all areas of public life.

The elements of graphic design can be combined to create original works of art.

Line is one of the fundamental elements of graphic design. It is defined by the movement of a point over a surface. It forms the outlines and vertices of shapes. It also defines direction and motion, even when it is broken.

Shape refers to a specific use of space which is often revealed by lines. Other elements of design can be used to define it in more detail.

Print is another very important element. Its most important characteristic is to be communicative.

Colour is a very extensive subject and a very powerful tool for visual communication. It can be used to bring attention to important areas, point the reader where to start looking, set the mood, merge elements or to further contrast them and even to evoke emotions.

The principles which a graphic designer must follow are: proportion, balance, alignment and direction, contrast, repetition, oneness and accent. Oneness is especially important – every element must have a purpose and no element should appear random or arbitrary.
